Press Conference

On 31 August 2014, a few days before “ECO Chess Cup”, a press conference was organized at the ECI hall. Prof. Iftikhar Hosain Arif, President of ECO Cultural Institute; Mr. Mohammad Jafar Kambouzia, President of Iran Chess Federation; Mr. Mohammad Reza Jabbari, Executive Manager of ECI; and Mr. Hadi Karimi, General Secretary of IRCF took part in the conference.

Prof. Iftikhar Husain Arif explained that ECI duty was cultural improvement of member countries and organizing such sport events was one of the helpful activities. He continued that organizing chess tournaments was a milestone in activities of ECI and expressed his hope to have such tournaments in other member countries of ECO.

Then, Mr. Kambouzia introduced sport as an educational phenomenon and a proper facility to develop peace and friendship between nations. He said: “We are trying to organize this tournament also for women in the coming year.”

ECO Cultural Institute in cooperation with Chess Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran will organize ECO Chess Cup here in Tehran.

Chess players from 10 member countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) will compete in the week-long event, slated to be held in September 2014.

“ECO Chess Cup”
3-12 September 2014; Tehran, Iran

ECO Cultural Institute (ECI) in collaboration with Iran Chess Federation will organize “ECO Chess Cup” from 3rd to 12th of September 2014 in Tehran to improve cooperation and exchange culture between member countries of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
1. Participation
1.1 Each national federation of member countries of ECO including Islamic Republic of Iran, Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey is entitled to send one of its top players to the tournament.
2. Accommodation
2.1 Free board and lodging will be provided to the invited players from 3rd September noon (Lunch) to 12th September morning (Breakfast).
2.2 All participants will be lodged at “Sport Hotel” in a twin room sharing with another player. 2.3 Organizing committee will provide or reimburse economy 2-ways air-tickets for the invited players.
3. Format
3.1 The tournament shall be run on a round robin system.
3.2 FIDE Laws of Chess will apply.
3.3 The time control is 90 min for 40 moves + 30 min for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from the first.
3.4 Final ranking will be determined according to scores at the end of the tournament.
3.5 If two or more players have the same total points after the last round, ties shall be broken in the following order:
1. Direct encounter
2. The greater number of wins
3. Sonneborn-Berger 4. Koya System
3.6 The drawing of lots and pairing will be done during technical meeting in the venue on September 3rd. It is necessary for all players to take part in the meeting.
3.7 Members of Appeal Committee, composed of 3 main members and 2 reserves, will be appointed in technical meeting.

The prize fund is 5000 USD, which is distributed as follows:
1. First Place Trophy, Gold Medal, Certificate of Achievement, 2500 USD
2. Second Place Silver Medal, Certificate of Achievement, 1500 USD
3. Third Place Bronze Medal, Certificate of Achievement, 1000 USD

6. Visa Information
All countries, which need visa to enter Iran, can apply for visa at the Iranian Embassies. Organizing committee will send an official invitation letter to help national federations in getting visas.

8. About ECO
Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Republic of Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the Member States. It is the successor organization of what was the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD), founded in 1964, which ended activities in 1979.
